A Drill to Understand the Swing Plane
June 9, 2004 - Lee Martin

If you stand erect and hold the golf club straight out in front of you and swing the club back and forth around your body, keeping the club shaft level during this motion, you have established a level swing plane.

Understanding what a swing plane is and realizing the importance of swinging on plane consistently will allow you to reach your potential.

When you take your stance and bend at the waist with a slight flex in your knees, you have established your swing plane.

The degree that you are addressing the ball below a level plane at the address position is the exact opposite the club shaft and your arms will be at the top of your backswing.

If your address position is 45 degrees below a level plane, then it will be 45 degrees above a level plane when you are at the top of your backswing. Maintain this same plane on the forward swing to a balanced finish.

Without being able to illustrate, think of the balanced and rhythmic swing of the late Payne Stewart. His swing stood the test of time and was always on plane.
