A Thumbs-up Approach to More Distance
June 16, 2004 - Joe Buttitta

Golfers always seem to want more power in their shots. It's an unending quest not easily served. But here's a way you can help yourself create more distance on your long shots.

Clubhead speed is a key ingredient to producing more distance. You can make your clubhead move faster through the ball by cocking your wrists on the backswing.

Many new golfers (and even some veterans) are not sure what that means, or how to do it.

The simple solution is to "go thumbs up" as you move into the backswing. Try this simple test: swing your club to a waist-high position without letting your wrists bend. Hit a few shots. They may go straight, but won't have any power behind them.

Now go waist high again, but point your thumbs skyward. You have just cocked or set your wrists to unleash a blur of speed at the ball.

The wrists are enormous power producers that also set the position of the clubface through impact.

Learn to go thumbs up on the backswing and you will experience double, maybe triple the power you are now producing.
