A Proper Stance Should Be an Athletic Position
September 15, 2004 - Lee Martin

The golf swing is different for every person. I look at each person and imagine what the correct swing would look like around his or her body and then work from there.

Age, flexibility, hand-eye coordination and athletic ability determine the overall success of the student.

Being fundamentally correct in the grip, stance, takeaway (backswing), position at the top of the backswing, impact position and follow through (finish) are of the utmost importance.

Let's talk about the stance. I prefer an athletic position, much like you're ready to catch a ball. The weight should be between the balls of the feet and the heels.

Your feet should be about shoulder width apart, with your weight evenly distributed on both feet.

Do not get your weight on the balls of your feet, which gives you the tendency to be too much up on your toes.
