A tighter grip helps on chips in tall grass
February 18, 2009 - Bob E. Smith

When chipping out of tall grass, you don’t want to grip the club too loosely because there’s a good chance of catching the clubhead in the grass. When that happens, it slows the club down and closes the face causing a pulled chip.

When I’m faced with the difficult task of making a shot out of the tall grass, I grip the club a lot tighter than normal. In doing so, there is no wrist action, just a constant pressure and a nice acceleration of the club through impact.

To help with the process, you may want to turn your left hand more to the right with this shot (just reverse the hands if you are left-handed).

Former CBS golf analyst Ken Venturi, who was always known for having a great wedge game, felt that with very little wrist and a pushing motion with the left thumb, the club would slip under the ball better through impact. You might want to give it a try.
