Alignment can be key factor in good putting
Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - Bob E. Smith

If you put a good stroke on your ball, or at least feel it was a good stroke, and you're consistently missing putts to the right, it may be your eye line — not your stroke — that is off.

To correct the problem, set up to the ball for a straight putt. Do not move any part of your body, especially your head.

Now take the putter in both hands and bring the shaft up to your face about 6 inches from your eyes. Adjust the shaft until your club is parallel with your eyes. The shaft will appear blurred if not directly parallel. Once you do it a few times you will see what I mean.

When the shaft is parallel to your eyes (not blurred) look down the shaft to see where it is pointing. Unconsciously, you will take the putter face back and through on eye line, not your target line.

If the shaft is pointing to the right of the hole, just open up your stance (aim more left of the hole with your body). Now pick the club up again and test your eyes. If the shaft is now pointing into the hole, you have found your correct alignment for putting. It can be as simple as opening your body 1 to 2 inches to get your eyes on the correct target line for more consistent putting.
