After leading the tournament by five strokes after Saturday’s round with a score of 7 under par 64, James Holley, a junior at San Diego State and resident of Chatsworth, hung on with an even par round of 71 on Sunday to enter a sudden death playoff, taking the championship on the first extra hole. Coming from behind to tie Holley after 36 holes was JJ Holen, resident of Castaic and Long Beach State golfer, besting the field on Sunday with a 65, earning his playoff spot.

On the first hole of sudden death, Holley put his second shot 8 feet from the hole and made his birdie putt. Holen’s second shot landed beside the green, with his chip shot just missing the mark and an opportunity to continue the playoff.

Both golfers finished the regulation 36 holes with scores of 7 under par 135.

Holley is a two-time winner of the Simi Valley City Championship, having won last year’s tournament as well, with a score of 132 over two rounds, or 10 strokes under par.

Placing third in the Championship Flight, with rounds of 70 and 66, for a total of 6 under par 136, was Tim Hogarth of Northridge. Torrance’s Lewis Simon shot rounds of 71/68 to take fourth place at 139, or three shots under par.

The Senior Championship flight was won by Dave Crawford of Camarillo, with a two-day even par total of 142, having come from behind with a second round score of 2 under par 69. Crawford bested Bret Mackay of Valencia, who shot 146, or 4 over par.

In the “A” flight, the gross score champion was Todd Mayne of Malibu, who shot 10 over par 152 in two rounds. David Miller of Fillmore and Raffi Bashian of Sherman Oaks shared second place honors with two day totals of 155.

Also in the “A” flight, Richard Graffeo of Camarillo finished with a two-round net total of 139, or 3 under par, to win by two strokes over Richard Lovato of Ventura, who shot net 141. Third place honors went to Doug Boyle of Agoura Hills with a two round total of 144, or two strokes over par.

In the “B” flight, Jerry Piro of Glendale won first place in a card-off with Thousand Oaks resident, Andreas Schudde, both posting two-round totals of 157. Third place honors went the Simi Valley resident, Mauricio Perez, with a score of 161.

The “B” flight net score winner was South Gate resident Richard Trejo, with a two-round total of 133, or 9 strokes under par. Second place was a tie at 134, or 8 strokes under par, posted by Stephen Canterbury of Moorpark, along with Arthur Chang of Simi Valley.

In the Senior A flight, Paul Cross of Santa Clarita shot 152, or 10 strokes over par, taking the gross score championship. John Larsen of Woodland Hills shot 154 to take second place.

The Senior A flight net score winner was Al Mendenhall of Canoga Park, with a two-day net score of 136, or 6 strokes under par, winning in a sudden death playoff over Clifton Tucker of Tujunga.
This weekend’s event was the 31th annual for Simi Valley and was another event sell-out.
